Charles S. Wood

Charles Staughton Wood, 90, passed away early Sunday morning, July 28, 2013 at his home in Tallahassee.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, March 31, 1923; the son of Charles Staughton Wood, Sr. and Harvie Louise Snead. He moved with his parents to Tallahassee, Florida in the third grade. He was a graduate of Leon High School, and an Eagle Scout in Troop 105. He was a veteran of World War II, having served from 1941 thru 1945 in the United States Merchant Marines.

After the war he returned to Tallahassee and married his high school sweetheart, Julia Frances Mays. Following graduation from the University of Florida in 1948 he began a career with the Leon County school system as an instructor with the D.C.T.
program at Leon High School, and later served as principal of Miccosukee Grammar School. In 1953 the family moved to Pensacola, Florida where he worked and traveled for Lederle Laboratories as a pharmaceutical representative for 15 years.
The family moved back to Tallahassee in 1967 when he opened the first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in Tallahassee on West Tennessee Street.
He operated the shop for 27 years before retiring. In his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and made many beautiful things for his home, his family and his friends. He was a member of the Tallahassee Exchange Club; past member of the Colonels Club; and a member of Grace Church of Tallahassee.
Survivors include his wife Julia of Tallahassee; three children, Fran Ferenchick of Tallahassee, Jan McClure (Dr. Bob McClure) of Lilburn, GA and Charles S. "Chip" Wood (Janet) of Gulf Breeze, FL; eleven grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, EDT, Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Grace Church of Tallahassee.
A reception for family and friends will follow in the church fellowship hall. Gifts in memory of Mr. Wood may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308; or to Grace Church of Tallahassee, 731 North Gadsden Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303.
