Edwin R. (Ed) Howard
Edwin R. (Ed) Howard, 94, died peacefully at home on February 5, 2014.
Born in Sand Mountain, Alabama, on November 17, 1919, Ed's family migrated to Jackson County, Florida, when he was an infant where he was raised and schooled. Following service in the Navy during WWII, Ed earned a degree in Forestry from the University of Florida and held a career with the State of Florida as a professional forester until his retirement.
Ed was a long-standing member of East Hill Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher as well as held membership on various leadership committees of the church. He was active in the community through membership in the Optimist Club and Toastmaster's Club. Gifted with a keen sense of humor, Ed's favorite hobbies included gardening, golfing, keeping up with current events, and cheering the Gator football team.
Ed was predeceased by his parents, Monroe and Essie Howard, his 9 siblings, and his wife of 50 years and mother of his daughters, Uneta B. (Dolly) Howard. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jewel C. Howard; two daughters, Debbie Weldon (Billy) and Nancy Barbarotto, Ft. Myers, FL; four grandchildren, Lindsay and Beth Brown, Ft. Myers, Geof Weldon (Rebekah), and Jenny Weldon; four great-grandchildren; and four stepchildren.
Visitation will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, February 9, followed by the funeral service at 3:00pm - both at East Hill Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a contribution to East Hill Baptist Church or Big Bend Hospice.
