Irene Lundquist DeMent was born in Sanford, FL, on July 6, 1921, and died in Tallahassee, FL, on August 1, 2014. She graduated from the Florida State Hospital School of Nursing in 1942, and served in the Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lt. during WWII.Irene married Herbert H. Dement, USN, upon his return from combat duty in the South Pacific, in 1946. They eventually settled in Miami, FL, where they raised three daughters, and where Irene resumed her nursing career. After retirement, they moved to Winter Haven, FL. Irene moved to Tallahassee in 2001. She is predeceased by her husband Herbert; parents Elmer and Alice Lundquist; daughter Donna Blackburn; brothers Adrian and George Lundquist; sisters Marian Edgerton, Virginia Copeland, Alva Conway, and Alice Costa.She is survived by her daughters Gail Merritt (Ron), Barbara DeMent; grandson Garry Merritt (Cheri); 4 great-grandchildren; son-in-law John Blackburn, and sister Camilla Meyers (Bob). Irene was proud of her Swedish pioneer roots. She had a wonderful spirit and will be greatly missed. A visitation will be held at Culley's MeadowWood on Riggins Rd, on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, from 6:00pm-8:00pm.Burial will be in Winter Haven, FL.
