James Robert "Bob" Sweat, Jr. was born December 18, 1932 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the only child of loving parents James Robert Sweat, Sr. and Mary Richey Sweat. Bob grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and was proud to serve in the Jacksonville Beach Lifesaving Corps as a young man. In his words, "the Corps gave me a start that carried me all the way."
Bob attended the Citadel Military College of South Carolina followed by the University of Florida where he served as Cadet Colonel of the Army R.O.T.C.and received a degree in accounting. Bob served 2 years active duty as a U.S. Army artillery officer at Fort Sill, Oklahoma during which time he met and married his wife of 56 years, Madelon Elliott. They had three children, Jim, Linda, and Brandon.
Bob was a highly respected business man. In the early 1960's, he was founder of Premium Assignment Corporation (PAC), currently one of the largest premium finance companies in the world.Bob also served as President of the Florida Premium Finance Association for many years and was known as one of the early pioneers of the industry. He served on the Board of Directors of Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and faithfully served as a deacon and elder at Faith Presbyterian Church.
Bob was an active sportsman.He enjoyed hunting, deep sea fishing, and later became an avid golfer. His group of hunting friends, known as the "Smuckers", became lifelong friends enjoying many outings together. During his retirement years, he and his wife enjoyed spending summers at their mountain retreat near Cashiers, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, three children, their spouses Caryn Sweat, Jared Elliot, and Stephanie Sweat; and six grandchildren, Lauren Sweat, Conner Sweat, Logan Elliot, Tanner Elliot, Carter Sweat, and Christian Sweat.
A funeral service will be held Friday, September 20th at 3 pm at Faith Presbyterian Church, 2200 North Meridian Road, Tallahassee, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308 or Faith Presbyterian Church.
