Katherine Dykes (Katie) Channing Obituary
Katherine (Katie) Dykes Channing

Katherine (Katie) Dykes Channing, 90, passed away March 22, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

Graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Roselawn Cemetery, Piedmont Rd., Tallahassee, Fl. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, March 26, at Culleys' Meadowwood, Timberlane Road.

Katie spent her younger years growing up in Quincy, Fl. After graduating from high school, she attended Bowling Green (Kentucky) Business University. Upon receiving her degree, Katie returned to Tallahassee and began her career with the Florida Department of Transportation, formerly the State Road Department. Katie was truly a legend and well respected employee during her 48 years serving in the Right of Way Division her entire career.

Katie was married to the love of her life, Walter D. Channing (Wallie), native of Bridgeport, Connecticut. They were married for 29 years until his untimely death in 1975 and were idyllic parents to Ginger and Danny. During her post retirement years, she enjoyed the company of the "DOT Retiree Girls" eating, traveling, and attending most an event that spelled fun. Katie truly lived her life to the fullest. But, most of all, her greatest passion and pride was spending time with her children and grandchildren whom she adored. She was an active lifetime member of the Elketts of Tallahassee Elks Lodge 937 and St. Johns Episcopal Church. All that knew Katie would agree that she was an elegant, sophisticated, intelligent and extremely independent lady that carried herself with much dignity. Her passing will, indeed, leave a hole in many hearts.

Katie is survived by her two children, Ginger Jordan and husband Jimmy, of Tallahassee; Danny Channing, of Atlanta; grandchildren Jared Channing and Ashley Channing both of Atlanta; extremely close cousins Julie, Ellory and Jonathan Fuqua; and Kenneth Anderson.

She was preceded in death by Walter D. Channing (husband); Moses and Lucy Dykes (parents); Virginia Dykes (sister); and very close cousin Joanne Anderson.

Very special thanks to her caregivers Sha'quan, Leah, Myra and the angels of Big Bend Hospice.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made in Katie's name to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd, Tallahassee, Fl 32308
