Dr. Orrin Bert Powell Jr.
Anderson, SC - Bert Powell, born September 16, 1916 in Savannah, Georgia, passed away April 8, 2014. Dr. Powell enjoyed 97 years of good health, a sharp mind and loving family and friends. He was a native of Alachua and Jacksonville, FL.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dr. Kathryn (Kit) Summers Powell of High Springs, FL. He was a 1st lieutenant in the US Army during World War II as an artillery forward observer and served ahead of the front lines in Normandy, the Ardennes, Belgium and the Rhineland.
He received four bronze stars for his service during the war.
After the war, he returned to Florida where he owned and ran a grocery store in High Springs.
He earned a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and Doctorate of Education, all from Florida State University. Dr. Powell spent his professional career as Director of Guidance and Counseling at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC where his wife was chairman of the Department of Home Economics.
Bert enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, reading and sharing his kind nature and dry wit with friends and family.

He is survived by his children, Orrin B. Powell III of Cornelius, NC; Bettianne Davenport of Columbia, SC; Kathy Trammell of Anderson, SC and Vick Powell of Anderson, SC; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 2609 N. Hwy. 29, Anderson, SC 29621 with Dr. Dennis Tedder officiating. Bert will be laid to rest next to Kit.

The family will visit with friends following the service. Memorials may be made to the Winthrop University General Scholarship Fund, 701 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29733.
