Patricia Y. Belcher, 85, passed away August 17, 2013 in Dublin, GA. She was born March 13, 1928 in Thomasville, GA and was the daughter of Lucile Freeman Yates and L.A. "Steve" Yates. Growing up in Tallahassee, FL, she a developed a lifelong love of animals, antiques, reading, theatre and travel.
After completing her preparatory education at Stuart Hall School in Staunton, Virginia, she graduated from Florida State University with a BFA in Speech and Drama, then went on to earn her Masters in Speech from the University of Georgia.During the summer of 1948, while taking classes at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, she met her future husband John C. Belcher, PhD. They later married and celebrated 42 years of marriage and raised five children together.
After teaching a number of years in Athens and north Georgia, in 1979, Patricia accepted a speech pathologist position with the Laurens County School System where she spent the remainder of her professional career. She was a charter member of the Georgia Speech and Hearing Association and a lifetime member of the American Speech and Hearing Association.She also served on the Board of the Laurens County Humane Society, volunteered for CASA as a child advocate and was an active member in the Georgia Teachers Retirement Association. Upon her retirement from the school system, Patricia had the opportunity to travel extensively, including several mission trips to Belize with Project Smile, a dental program for the underserved.
During the last year of her life, Patricia started a new career by serving as a spokesperson for Pitts Toyota.With an initial catch phrase of, "Are you for real?", Patricia transformed into multiple characters for Pitts Toyota's advertising campaign that showed off her acting ability, creativity and lively sense of humor. Taping her last spot in December 2012, these spots can still be viewed on YouTube.
Predeceased by her parents Lucile Freeman Yates and L. A. "Steve" Yates; brothers Albert Yates and Steve Yates; and husband John C. Belcher.Survivors include: brother Charles Robert Yates (Linda) of Tallahassee; daughters Meriwyn Belcher, Laura McGee, Glenda Berry; sons John Christopher and Matthew Stephenson; grandchildren Ashley McGee Kim, Charles Newton McGee, Jr., Katherine Renfrow Lauder, Bailey Lynn Strickland, Brian Temple Belcher, and great grandchildren Maisie and Elias Kim.
A "cradle Episcopalian", services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Dublin. Visitation will be held leading up to the services from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church. Private graveside services will be later for immediate family members.
