Albert H. Matthews, Sr.

Cartersville, GA

Albert Hallums Matthews, Sr., age 87 of Cartersville, formerly of Acworth, went peacefully to his eternal home in Heaven on Monday, April 14, 2014.

He was born on August 19, 1926 in Cedar Hill, TN. He graduated from Springfield High School, Springfield, TN in 1944, enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and served in the South Pacific on the U.S.S. Union. After serving his tour, he attended Tennessee Technological University on a football scholarship and received his B.S. degree, and later earned his Masters at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. While at Tennesee Tech, he married his high school sweetheart, Martha Jean McMurtry of Greenbrier, TN, on March 29, 1947.

Upon graduation in 1950, he moved his family to Acworth, GA and became the head football coach and taught biology, health and physical education, and driver education at Acworth High School. When Acworth High became North Cobb High School, he continued as head coach and teacher through 1967. He lead two teams to the state championship game during his 17 year coaching career. In 1993, the football field at North Cobb was named "Albert Matthews Field" in his honor. In 2006, he was among the first class to be inducted into the North Cobb Athletic Hall of Fame. For several years in the 1960's, he contracted with the Acworth Lake Authority to operate and manage Acworth Beach during the spring and summer months. He later was an administrator at Sprayberry High School and Awtrey Middle School. He retired with 35 years of service in 1983 from the Cobb County School District.

He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Acworth First Baptist in 1951 and was baptized at Lake Acworth. He taught a teen Sunday School class in the early 1950's. Among his hobbies were hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hallums Matthews and Mary Jo Darden Matthews; sister, Linda Matthews Draper and brother, Ray Sory Matthews.

Mr. Matthews is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Martha Jean McMurtry Matthews; son, Albert Hallums (Hal) Matthews, Jr. and wife, Evelyn Williams Matthews; daughter, Rhonda Matthews Dulaney and husband Ronald T. Dulaney; son, Brett Mac Matthews, Sr. and wife, Janice Arrants Matthews; daughter, Merry Jill Matthews LaVilla and husband, Oscar LaVilla; brothers, John L. Matthews, Billy Matthews and Lynn Matthews; and sister, Judy Matthews Parker; grandchildren, Albert Hallums (Matt) Matthews III and wife Anna Melo Matthews, Stephanie Matthews Kastner and husband Martin Kastner, Sarah Jill Dulaney, Amy Lynn Matthews, Brett Mac Matthews, Jr., Austin Matthews, Sean Hallums LaVilla, Merrilee LaVilla, Kelsey LaVilla, and Lindsay LaVilla; great-grandchildren, Haeden Matthews, Caelyn Matthews, Samuel Matthews, Harrison Matthews, and Peyton Dulaney, as well as many nieces, nephews and other family members.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 18th at 11 a.m., at the Acworth First Baptist Church, with Rev. Bill Abbott and Rev. Jerry Austin officiating. Interment will be Saturday, April 19th at 2 p.m. CST, at the Matthews Family Cemetery in Cedar Hill, TN. The family will receive friends between the hours of 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
