FISHER, Hugh Edward Age 94, passed away following a brief illness on September 20, 2013 in Lafayette, LA. Hugh was born August 21, 1919 in Smith County and was raised near Greenbrier, TN. He served in the Army Air Force at Keesler Field, MS, where he trained airplane mechanics and rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1950, receiving a BS in electrical engineering and a letter in baseball. He married Leta Gilmer of Perry County in 1952 and spent his entire career with Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company (later Tenneco), with posts in Centerville and Bolivar, TN, Lafayette, LA and Houston, TX, where he retired as vice-president of operations in 1984. He served as a lay preacher in the United Methodist Church throughout his life. The couple retired to Leta's hometown of Lobelville, and returned to the care of family in Lafayette, LA in January of 2010, where Leta passed away on Christmas Day in 2011. Hugh is survived by his brother, Dr. George Denton Fisher, former athletic director at Austin Peay State University, and his wife Myra of Clarksville; two sisters-in-law: Jean Gilmer Greenwood of Dickson and Johnnia Gilmer Clark of Lobelville; and his four children and their families: Shawn Gilmer Fisher of Las Vegas, NV, Michelle Fisher Wenger of Southaven, MS, John Hugh Fisher and Cherry Fisher May, both of Lafayette, LA. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Edward and Agnes Gann Fisher, and four siblings, Martha Elizabeth Givan of Lebanon, Charles Burgess Fisher and Wilma Faye Fort of Greenbrier, and Larry Lajoie Fisher of Springfield. Visitation will be Friday, September 27, 2013 at 10 a.m., at McDonald Funeral Home in Lobelville; graveside services with military honors will be at 1 p.m., at Gilmer Cemetery.
