Mr. J.P. Mayton, age 86 of Nashville, TN, passed away Saturday, January18, 2014 at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.
J.P. was born August 7, 1927 in Blackstone, VA, the Son of the late Carrie Gibbs and John Mayton. He was also preceded in death by Daughter; Debra Mayton, Brothers; John Wesley Mayton and Fletcher Mayton, and Sister; Carrie Wuensch. J.P. married Shirley Ann Preston. They are members of the Lakewood Baptist Church in Nashville, TN.
When J.P. was 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served Four years during WWII on the USS Piedmont AD17. J.P. went to work for the Anheuser-Busch distributor in Nashville, The Ajax Turner Company, as General Sales Manager where he retired after 35 years. During his lifetime, J.P. was a disc jockey, performed in several bands, and was a great singer and songwriter. In the 60's he fulfilled a lifelong dream of appearing on the stage of "The Grand Ole Opry." J.P. was a 50 year member of the John B. Garrett Lodge #711 F&AM and also served in Horse Patrol at the Al Menah Temple. J.P. received the Good Neighbor Award in 2002 from the National Restaurant Association and was instrumental in founding the "100% Kids" in Smith County. He served on the Board of Directors for the Tennessee Restaurant Association and the Nashville Hotel and Motel Association.
Mr. Mayton is survived by Wife; Shirley Preston Mayton of Nashville, TN. Children; Tina (Kenny) Buck of LaVergne, TN, Kelly Manning of Gordonsville, Tommy (Margaret) McDowell of Carthage, TN, and Kristi McDowell Sutton of Mt. Juliet, TN; Seven Grandchildren; Keela, Christopher, Maisie, Jordon, Brooke, Brianna, and Bonnie; One Great-Grandchild; Ashlyn; Two Brother-in-laws; Larry "Squirrel" (Brenda) Preston of Gordonsville, TN, and Ed Donald (Mary Jo) Preston of Bellwood, TN; Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.
Funeral Services for Mr. Mayton are scheduled to be conducted on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the Hibbett & Haley Funeral Home in Donelson with Bro. Keith Cameron officiating.
Graveside Services and Interment are scheduled to be conducted on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Gordonsville Cemetery.
Visitation with the Mayton family will be held on Monday from 1-6 p.m. at the Hibbett & Haley Funeral Home in Donelson, TN.
The Mayton Family requests that donations be made to the Lakewood Baptist Church Children's Department.
