Betty Bowen Wiggs

LAFAYETTE - Betty Wiggs, formerly Betty Bowen, passed away on June 11, 2014 at Camelot of Broussard with her family by her side. Betty was born in Herrin, Illinois. Feb. 3, 1926, daughter of Judge E. N. Bowen and Beulah Schrader.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert A. Wiggs, sons Warren B. Wiggs (and wife Judy) of Youngsville, LA; Calvin R. Wiggs (and wife Linda) of Baton Rouge, LA; two grandchildren, Gabrielle (Gaby) Wiggs of Youngsville, LA and Aleksandr (Sasha) Wiggs of Baton Rouge, LA; and nephew John B. Baal (and wife Cathy) of Hot Springs Village, AR. She was preceded in death by her parents E. N. Bowen and Beulah Schrader Bowen and one sister Ann Baal.

Mrs. Wiggs was a resident of Lafayette for 50 years. She was very active in the community. She was a past president of the League of Women Voters, officer in American Association of University Women and Lafayette Garden Club, member of The Book Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and organizer of The Betty Club and two Breakfast Clubs. She was also a charter member of the Friends of Vermilionville and she served as a League of Women Voters representative on the Charter Revision Commission under Mayor Bowen.

A graduate of Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois with a degree in Journalism, her working career included copy writing and public relations in Chicago, Illinois and Pasadena, California. She was advertising manager of a department store in Springfield, Illinois, where she met her husband Robert and became a wonderful mother for her two sons. She was an editor of Information Services and Alumni publications at the Southern Illinois University and the University of Kentucky and served as editor of The Staff Magazine at the University of Iowa. Upon moving to Lafayette, LA from Baton Rouge, LA in 1965 when her husband joined the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL - now the University of Louisiana, Lafayette) Art faculty. Later, she studied library science at USL and upon certification worked as a part-time Librarian at Teurlings Catholic High School from 1968 to 1972. In her later years, she traveled extensively to Europe, China, Japan, Israel, Turkey, and South Africa with her husband, who was invited to lecture at numerous conferences.

A Celebration of Life visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Location.

The family would like to give special thanks to Betty's friends whom she cherished deeply for their love and prayers these last few months. Also thanks to Hospice of Acadiana and her healthcare sitters for their support in her time of need.
