Lafayette - Funeral service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, April 13, 2013 for Colonel Earl "Bitsie" Washington, Jr., MD, 59 at Progressive Baptist Church-2001 E. Simcoe Street-Lafayette, LA. The officiating pastor will be Rev. Leroy Banks from Bethlehem Baptist Church in Breaux Bridge, LA.
Interment will be in St. Thomas Baptist Church Cemetery in New Iberia, LA.
A resident of Breaux Bridge, LA and native of New Iberia, LA , Colonel Washington, MD passed away at 9:57pm Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, LA.
"Bitsie" as he was affectionately known to his family and the community leaves to mourn but in God's care, his son, Joshua Washington of Breaux Bridge, LA; his brother, Corey Perro (Jody) of Virginia; his uncle, Daniel Williams (Ola) of New Jersey; his special cousins, Adrian and Jay Robinson; and a host of family, colleagues and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dianna Jane Boyance Washington; his son, Marcus P Washington; his parents, Earl Washington, Sr. and Lillie Mae Williams Washington.
He attended Jonas Henderson High School and was a graduate from New Iberia Senior High School in 1970. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1974. He received his medical degree from Tulane University's School of Medicine in 1978.
He did his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, GA where he served briefly as Chief Medical Resident. He received his Gastroenterology fellowship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas in 1985. During Operation Desert Storm Desert Shield, he served Chief of Internal Medicine at United States Army Hospital in Fort Polk, LA. He retired as Colonel from the United States Army after more than 28 years of service to his country. He was Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine.
He was a Physician Executive of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette, LA. Additionally, he was Medical Director of Wound Care and Hyperbarics at Lourdes. He was Medical Director at Saint Brendan's Rehabilitation and Specialty Hospital in Lafayette, LA and Children's Healthcare Clinic of Acadian.
Dr. Washington was a spirit filled Christian worker at Bethlehem Baptist Church. He served as a deacon, musician, and participated in a weekly Bible study group. He was regarded as very enthusiastic adult Sunday school teacher.
During his military service, he was the recipient of the Oak Leaf Cluster on three separate occasions most notably in 1990 for services performed in Operation Desert Storm Desert Shield and for services in Costa Rica. He also received the United States Army Certificate of Achievement for Overseas Duty Training in 1997, and the Legion of Merit in 2001. He was recipient of numerous other awards including Sterling's Who's Who of Medicine, Outstanding Young Men of America in 1989, the Lupus Foundation 1994, Certificate of Appreciation from the State of Louisiana, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Gulf Coast Region Distinguished Chapter Citation Lastly, he was published in many medical journals.
He was a member of numerous organizations including Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He was also apart of several Medical Societies, such as the National Medical Association of Lafayette where he formally served as President of Henry Tyler Chapter, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, Louisiana State Medical Society, and Lafayette Parish Medical Society.
His friends, family, and colleagues appreciate the facilities that assisted in care.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013 at Progressive Baptist Church from 5:00pm-9:00pm and resume at the church on Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 7:00am until time of service (11:00am).
