Elizabeth "Liz" Dugas

ABBEVILLE - Funeral services will be held Friday, May 16, 2014 at a 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Elizabeth "Liz" Dugas, 93, who passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Abbeville General Hospital.

She will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery with Reverend William C. Blanda officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Carbett "Trey" Duhon, III, Jonathan Duhon, Beau Falgout, Timmy Sonnier, Randall Landry, Chris Broussard and Wilmer Dugas. Scriptural readings will be read by Teesie Landry and Ellen Falgout. Musical selections performed by Tommy Guidry, Theresa Rose Mayard and Johnny Luquette. Offertory gifts presented by her great grandchildren.

Born in 1921 in the Bayou Tigre area, she was a lifelong resident of Abbeville. She spent most of her career serving customers throughout the area with First National Bank, First Commercial Bank and Hibernia bank for 50 years. "Miss Liz", as most of her customers knew her, was the first to open a drive thru bank in Vermilion Parish and was best known to all the children of her customers as the "candy lady" being the first to provide candy to the children. She was a 63 year breast cancer survivor becoming an inspiration to all who fell victim to this terrible disease. As a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen, she served as Eucharistic minister as well as a member of the church council and was a church trustee for many years. She was also a devoted member of the Catholic Daughters and the Lay Carmelites.

She found great joy and love in her family and family gatherings. She will always be remembered for her generosity, kindness, and strength of character. An extremely moral, honest and devoted person, she also embodied a deep faith in God, integrity and a strong work ethic. She also had a great love for her precious New Orleans Saints and looked forward every year to cheer them on.

She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia Dugas Duhon and her husband Carbett Duhon, Jr. of Abbeville La., Mary Beth Dugas Falgout and her husband Joe Falgout of Abbeville, La.; four grandchildren, Carbett "Trey" Duhon, III and his fiancé Lisa O'Neal of Brookshire, Tx., Jonathan Blake Duhon and his wife Linda of Corinth, Tx., Beau Falgout and his wife Abi of Lafayette, La., Jenny Sonnier and her husband Timmy of Maurice, La.; five great grandchildren, Jonathan Daniel Duhon and Cadi Anna Duhon of Corinth, Tx.; Emma Claire Falgout, Jack Thomas Falgout, Lola Elizabeth Falgout and one step great grandaughter Amelie Rose Augello of Lafayette, La.; sisters in law Ouida Broussard and Ruby Broussard and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by the "love of her life", her husband, Emile Dugas ; her parents, Rene Broussard and Elite Meaux Broussard; two brothers, Alton Broussard and Irvin Broussard and one infant grandchild, Jonathan Emile Duhon .

The family would like to give special thanks for her loving caregivers who became so much of our family unit during her care; Jane Bouton, Ellen Chatman and Verian Bertrand. We would also like to give thanks and appreciation to her doctors; Dr. Ronald Lahasky, Dr. Jon Leleux, Dr. Dana Dicharry and Dr. Weston Miller. In addition we would like to thank the 3rd floor nursing staff and the nurses in ICU for the wonderful and compassionate care given to her.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Friday, May 16, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. when the procession will depart for the church.

Contributions can be made to Mt. Carmel Elementary, Vermilion Catholic High and St. Mary Magdalen.
