LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Catholic Church for George McKenzie Nims, 84, who passed away peacefully at his home in Lafayette, on Saturday, December 8, 2012.
Father Hampton Davis, Pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services.
George was born and raised in Fort Mill, South Carolina, March 3, 1928. His parents, who preceded him in death, were Marion and Douglas Nims. He graduated from Fort Mill High School and attended the University of South Carolina and Western Carolina University. After college, the oil field brought George to Louisiana where he met and married Mary Fabacher from New Orleans.
George was Vice President of Patterson Rental Tools for 20 years. He then opened Nims Industrial Rubber Supply, which operated for 15 years. After retiring, he returned to work for Dolphin Compactors and Equipment, where he continued to work for 10 years until retiring a final time.
George served as a past board member of Oakbourne Country Club, Petroleum Club of Lafayette and the Most Holy Sacrament Covenant. George was a veteran of the United States Army, honorably discharged in 1947.
George, affectionately known as "Bone", to many friends and family, touched many people with his true sense of humor and love of people. He lived and loved life to the fullest.
Survived by his wonderful wife of 61 years, Mary, his two sisters, Dorothy Owens; Eleanor and brother- in- law, George Oates and was preceded in death by his brother, Doug Nims. Also survived by George are his loving daughters, Karen and son-in-law Peter Fortier, Peggy and son-in-law Denny Wright, Lydia and son-in-law Chook Cloninger and son, Robert Nims.
"Bone" was adored by his nine grandchildren, Charles Keller and wife, Jennifer; Caroline Denny and husband, Jory; Cord Wright and wife Kelly, Judd Wright and wife Misty; Amy Jolly and husband Stewart, Molly Cloninger; Hunter Fortier and wife Amy; Tucker Nims, Maddie Nims and their mother Terri Nims.
He also has 7 great grandchildren, Rex, Wes, George Colton, Jory Joseph, Cooper, Greyson and Mallory.
Pallbearers include Charles Keller, Cord Wright, Judd Wright, Hunter Fortier, Tucker Nims, Stewart Jolly and Jory Denny.
The family requests that visitation be observed on Monday, December 10, 2012 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE location.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes to have donations sent to Our Lady Queen of Peace Fire Fund, 145 Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Lafayette, LA 70501.To the attention of Rev. Hampton Davis.
