Harris Sonnier

RAYNE - Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 10:00 am for Harris Sonnier , 82, who died Monday, September 16, 2013 at his residence in Rayne, LA .

Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery #2 in Rayne, LA.

Mr. Sonnier was a native of Duson, LA but lived all his life in Rayne, LA. He was born September 24, 1930 in Duson, LA to the late Marcel and Odile Sonnier.

He was a member of American Legion Post 77 in Rayne, LA and served in the Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Sonnier was never blessed with any children of his own but helped his beloved wife raise her sisters five children during her illness and then death. He was married to Ida Marie Guidry Sonnier for 61 years.

He is survived by the five boys he help raise, Mark Lyons and wife Penny of Jackson, GA, Tim Lyons and Jessica of Kaplan, Kelly Lyons and companion Elaine of Crowley, Kim Lyons and companion Becky of Scott, Terry Lyons and wife Katina of Rayne, one sister, Melba Lavergne of Lafayette, two brothers, Nelon "Shorty" Sonnier and wife Shirley of Lafayette, Henry Sonnier and wife Brenda of Scott, God Children, Wilton Sonnier and wife Geraldine of Lafayette and Annette Hidalgo of Duson, fifteen children he considered his grandchildren, along with many, many loving nieces and nephews and sister-in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Ida Marie Guidry Sonnier, parents, Marcel Sonnier, Jr.and Odile Sonnier, two sisters, Rita Menard, Maisel Duhon, six brothers, Aaron Sonnier, Harold Sonnier, Nathen Sonnier, Irvin Sonnier, Melvin Sonnier, Donald Sonnier.

A rosary will be recited Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at 7:00 pm at Gossen Funeral Home, Rayne, LA.

Friends will be received at Gossen Funeral Home, Inc., Rayne, LA Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 9:00 am until 10:00 pm and Thursday, September 19, 2013 from 8:00 am until 9:30 am .

The family would like to acknowledge the caring staff of Hospice of Acadiana and also his care givers during his time of illness Marlene LeBauve, Louanna Credeur, Rexine Wrangler and Bridgette Leon.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial contribution be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston St. Suite 200, Lafayette, LA
