James was born Sunday, May 1, 1927 in New York City, NY and was one of four children born to Dr. Henry S.F. Cooper and Katherine Guy F. Cooper. Boyhood summers spent in Cooperstown, NY instilled a deep love of the nature and history of the region of the Catskills. As a young man, he learned to fly and was known for his aerial antics over the Susquehanna Valley in his Piper Cub.
He attended Phillips Academy at Andover, Massachusetts, and enlisted in the Navy prior to graduation in 1945. After a year's stint on the aircraft carrier Mindori, he enrolled at Yale University where he received a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and History. Further studies at Columbia University in New York City led to a Master's degree in Geology.
Cooper moved to Lake Charles, LA in 1955 where he worked as a Field Geologist for Atlantic Richfield. It was this job assignment that led to his meeting Edna Shaheen, his wife of 56 years. After marrying, they moved to Lafayette in 1956 and started a family of what would include seven children. He struck out on his own as an independent Geologist in the early 60's and attained success in several discoveries in Southwest Louisiana.
Besides his family, his proudest achievements were the many civic and educational endeavors that today still endure. He was a charter member of the Civitan Club of Lafayette for over 50 years where he will be remembered as a tireless fundraiser. He was on the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension for many years and was instrumental in the survival and growth of the Ascension Day School of Lafayette during its early stages. He considered his most important accomplishment to be the securing of the land and much of the funding during the inception of the Episcopal School of Acadiana in Cade, LA.
Cooper had many close friends who relished his sharp wit and intellect, as well as his expertise in the areas of Geology, American History and current events. He will be remembered for his sense of adventure, wisdom and boundless generosity, and for the manner in which he served joyfully wherever he could.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his beloved wife, Edna Shaheen Cooper of Youngsville; seven children, Michael L.F. Cooper and his wife Sue, Mark A.F.
