BROUSSARD - Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014, at 2:00 pm at the Chapel of the Episcopal School of Acadiana in Cade for James Oliver Hughes, 39, a resident of Houston, Texas, who died on March 8, 2014 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife Kerri and their two daughters, Nicole and Mila. James will be deeply missed by his family. James is also survived by his parents, Dr. Richard W. Hughes and Lyn Wall Hughes of Broussard, Louisiana, and James' mother-in-law, Guadalupe Fernandez. James' surviving brothers and sisters, are Richard Hughes, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of New Orleans and their children Sarah Anne and Richard III; David Hughes and his wife, Kathy of New Orleans, and their two children James and Katherine; Nancy Hinze and her husband Gerald of Broussard, and their children Natalie and William; Cyndi Broussard and her husband Hal of Broussard, and their children, Neil, Matt, and Sarah; Susan Barnette of Jackson, MS and her children Madeleine and Caroline; Karen Curry, M.D. of Broussard and her husband Thomas Curry, M.D. and their children Taylor and Davis; Ned Germany of Memphis TN, and his wife Tiffany, and their children, Brittany, Elizabeth, Olivia, Jack and Lauren.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. Wallace Wall and Beatrice Peck Wall, and Mr. James Oliver Hughes, Sr. and Nina Maddox Hughes.
James was a 1993 graduate of Episcopal School of Acadiana. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Mississippi in 1998. Following the 9/11 tragedy, James voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army, and completed basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. Thereafter, he was immediately deployed to Kuwait where he served in the Third Infantry Division and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, including the initial invasion of Baghdad. James' unit received a Presidential Citation for their contributions to this military campaign. James, who served as the Team Leader for his Unit, was a brave and honorable soldier. He loved his country.
After fulfilling his commitment to the military and receiving an honorable discharge, James and his family moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where he received his Juris Doctorate from Mississippi College School of Law. James was a member of both the Mississippi and Texas State Bar Associations. He was a successful attorney practicing with The Powell Law Firm in Pearland, Texas. John Powell, II and John Powell III were tremendous role models and believed in James professionally. James' family is forever grateful to the Powells.
James had a love for boxing, and was a 1999 and 2001 Club Champion boxer at Ragin' Cajun Amateur Boxing Club in Lafayette, coached by Beau Williford.
The Hughes family would like to extend a special thank you to Beau Williford, Kirk Davis, Eric Davis, Nathan Ranstead, Zach Ranstead, Gil Reeves and Dr. and Mrs. Monty Rizzo for their undying love and loyalty. He loved them all dearly. The family would also like to thank the faculty and the administration of Episcopal School of Acadiana.
Following the memorial at Episcopal School of Acadiana, a full military service will take place graveside at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery in Broussard, Louisiana.
