NEW IBERIA - A private memorial service for family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 19th.
John Coco died at the age of 89 on Friday, August 15, 2014 at the home of his daughter in Lafayette, Louisiana from congestive heart failure.
John was born July 1, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the oldest of three sons raised by Myron and Inez Coco in New Iberia, Louisiana. His brother Joe Coco lives in Lacombe, Louisiana with his family. His youngest brother, Myron Anthony "Buddy" Coco, lives in New Iberia with his family.
John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in Peleliu Island, Okinawa and Occupied China.
John married Maurine Lee on November 8, 1947 in Jeanerette, Louisiana and was married for 65 years until Maurine passed in 2012 from Alzheimer's disease.
John started his career in radio and television at KVIM in New Iberia, Louisiana. As general manager of several stations, this career took him across the United States from Memphis, TN to Las Vegas, NV.
John tells many stories of his amazing life: During his early adulthood, while playing for the Tabasco Minor League Baseball team, he held the record for the most home runs. During his voyage to the South Pacific in World War II, John became poker buddies with Bill Veek, who later owned the Chicago White Sox. Later in his professional career, while running a television station in Las Vegas, he met many celebrities including Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, and Merv Griffin.
After several years away from home, John wanted to be closer to his family and friends in Louisiana. He retired from television, and worked the rest of his career as a salesman in the Oilfield industry.
John was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He and Maurine enjoyed travelling the world.
John lived the last years of his life at the home his daughter, surrounded by family. He is survived by his daughter, Cathy and her husband, Terry Broussard, their children and grandchildren: Scott, Monica & Mason Broussard, Jacab Gibson; Shannon, Kirk, Elliott & Jackson Lynd; Allison, Mari, Sophia & Mariano Alesi. By his daughter, Karen, and her husband, J.C. Wilson and children and grandchildren: Lisa, Mike & Emilee Camacho; Keith Lopresto. By his brothers and their families: Joe & Lu Coco; Buddy & Margaret Coco.
