A native and lifelong resident of New Iberia, he passed on January 4, 2014 at Lafayette General Medical Center. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Star Pilgrim Baptist Church. His relationship with the Lord was genuinely passionate and he continued his spiritual journey as a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church.

A product of Iberia Parish Schools, John participated in track and field, and also played a number of instruments (saxophone, tuba and piano). Because of his outgoing personality and sense of humor, his circle of influence grew. He was a former New Iberia police officer and a former school bus driver for the Iberia Parish School Board. John is best known for and found his greatest fulfillment as a professional driver in the trucking industry. He enjoyed cooking and sampling various cuisines, whether as a restaurant cook, through attendance at festivals and fairs, or barbequing for family and friends. John was also a well-loved patient at Kidney Care of Acadiana and Ochsner Medical Center of New Orleans. As his health challenges increased, he became a knowledgeable and enthusiastic follower of all televised sports and knew nearly most of the stats for each sport.

He leaves to cherish his memory and in God's care three brothers, James Simmons, Jr. (Mary) of Lafayette, LA, Claude Simmons, Sr. (Mary) and Christopher Simmons (Patricia) both of New Iberia, LA; four sisters, Rev. Mary Bashay, Shirley Benoit (Wilson), Barbara Davis (Cleveland) and Joyce Simmons, all of New Iberia, LA; three children who he raised as his own, twins Kayle Harris, Kayla Harris and Wymesha Harris, all of New Iberia; four grandchildren; three god-children, Jamie Simmons, Krisi Clarkston and Ma'Kenzie Simmons; a special cousin, Teletha Duchane (Nolan); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He now joins in glory with his parents, Rev. James W. Simmons, Sr. and Wanda Armstrong Simmons; step-mother, Ida Mae Fleming Simmons; brother, Leroy K. Simmons, Roscoe C. Simmons.

Active pallbearers will be, James Simmons, Jr., Claude Simmons, Sr., Christopher Simmons, Kayle Harris, Claude Simmons, Jr. and Christopher Shawn Simmons.
