Joseph Wyvos Edmond

OPELOUSAS - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA, for Mr. Joseph Wyvos Edmond, 84, who passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, after a courageous battle against cancer. The Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Monsignor Keith J. DeRouen. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas.

Wyvos, as he was known to everyone, was a long-time resident of Opelousas. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he worked for Entex Gas Company for 32 years. Upon accepting early retirement in 1987, he began his second career as deputy assessor at the St. Landry Parish Assessor's Office where he worked for 25 years up to the time of his passing. His love of life and his family was evident to everyone he knew and met. He was a parishioner at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church and served faithfully as an usher at weekend Mass for many, many years. Wyvos was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Opelousas for over 40 years and served in every officer capacity in the club during his tenure while also being named Kiwanian of the Year several times over that span. He took great pride in serving for over 25 years as a chairman of the John Bradley Memorial Kiwanis Football Jamboree, which raised money for local schools and provided funds for student scholarships. For his lifelong service to the community, Wyvos was named as "Humanitarian of the Year" by the St. Landry Parish Chamber of Commerce in 2010.

Wyvos is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred Guidroz Edmond; two daughters, Kathy Hebert and her husband, Keith of Opelousas; and Donna Dupre and her husband, Neal of Carencro; one son, David Edmond and his wife, Kim of Lafayette; and five grandsons: Tommy Hebert, Ryan Dupre, Seth Dupre, Cole Edmond, and Connor Edmond.

Wyvos was preceded in death by his parents, Evans and Melonie Edmond; his sister, Bernice Edmond Robin; and his brothers, Elvie Edmond, Doris Edmond, Melvin Edmond, and Nelson Edmond.

Pallbearers will be David Edmond, Keith Hebert, Neal Dupre, Tommy Hebert, Ryan Dupre, and Seth Dupre. Honorary pallbearers will by Rhyn Duplechain, J. D. Emon, Nelson Edmond, Cole Edmond, and Connor Edmond.

The family would like to offer deep heartfelt thanks to St. Joseph's Hospice of Acadiana who provided outstanding care and extraordinary compassion in Wyvos' last two weeks with us.
