LAfayette - Melvin Joseph Jacques, 66, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Regional medical Center of Acadiana. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced. Survivors include his daughters, Angela Jacques and Tina Jacques both of Lafayette, one brother, James Jacques of Lafayette, and two granddaughters, Sara Moore and Amelia Brock both of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his wife Becky Dupre' Jacques, his father Ernest Jacques, and mother Josephine Jacques Melancon.
A native of Lafayette, Melvin was born May 14, 1947 and grew up in Cecilia. After graduating from Cecilia High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego for six years, serving as a drill sergeant and rifleman. He earned a sharpshooter badge and served as a drill sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1972. The Marine Corps values of service, courage and resilience remained with Melvin throughout his life. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and a generous friend who was always willing to come to the aid of those in need. He was also an outspoken advocate of veterans' rights and worked tirelessly to get better veterans' services in the Lafayette area. Melvin was a talented carpenter and electrician who befriended clients from all walks of life. He will be greatly missed.
The Jacques family would like to thank the staffs of Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Regional Medical Center of Acadiana and Hospice Compassus, as well as family and friends for their loving support of Melvin during his illness, treatment and his journey home.
