Bill was born Tuesday, February 16, 1926 in Marshall, TX but was a longtime resident of Acadiana. He was a decorated Korean War veteran having retired from the Air Force in 1966 after 20 years of loyal service. He worked as an aircraft mechanic at Lockheed in Lake Charles from 1966-1972. In 1972, an opportunity to open Interstate Batteries of Southwest Louisiana would bring him to Lafayette for the rest of his life. He truly loved Lafayette and its people. He became a diehard Ragin' Cajuns fan and passed that wonderful gift on to his family. He loved hunting and fishing and all activities that involved spending time with family and friends. Bill was a member of St. Edmond Catholic Church in Lafayette for 40 years.
Mr. Atkins is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 65 years, Margaret Melancon Atkins; one son, Donald Atkins and his wife Vanita, and his real pride and joy, his granddaughter, Katie Grayce Atkins. They all reside in Lafayette. He was blessed with many dear nieces and nephews and extended family as well as many surrogate "sons".
He was the son of Ned Atkins and the former Clara Lee Wyatt, both deceased. He had two brothers, Emory and James Atkins, and a sister, Gladys Smith, all of whom preceded him in death.
