Adrian Joseph (Joe) Leavitt

Adrian Joseph (Joe) Leavitt, 92, of Salinas, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital with his children at his side. He was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Los Angeles.

Joe was employed in the agriculture industry most of his working life. He served in both accounting and purchasing roles for Inter Harvest/Sun Harvest/Sun World in both Salinas and Bakersfield and retired at the age of 77.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spreckels, as well as the Knights of Columbus and Elks Lodges in both Salinas and Bakersfield. During World War II in the 50th Medical Battalion of the U.S. Army, he landed on Normandy Beach and served in the Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns.

While devoted to his family and his Catholic faith, he also thoroughly enjoyed traveling the world, fishing, golfing, skiing, photographing nature, camping, tending to his fruit trees, good food and wine, playing bridge, walking Monterey beaches, and watching the crops growing in the fields and rooting for his grandchildren at their sporting events.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Sandra Norma Leavitt, who passed away in 1996.

He is survived by his brother, Fred Leavitt of Exeter; his daughters, Elaine Leavitt of Jakarta, Indonesia and Ann (Mike) Briley of Salinas, and his son, Steve (Kim) Leavitt of Salinas. 'Papa' leaves behind ten adoring grandchildren, Jenna, Ryan, Tim, Tyler, Matt, Amber, Nathan, Patrick, Grace, and Angela, all of Salinas.

The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Villa Serra.
