Bernard "Bernie" Stein Obituary
Bernard "Bernie" Stein

Bernard "Bernie" William Stein was called home by the Lord on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, just two years and two months after the death of his beloved wife, Marianna. Bernie was born July 28, 1924, in Seattle, WA.

Bernie was married to Marianna, who passed away March 4, 2011. They met as students at Salinas High School while riding the bus to and from school. Bernie lived in Salinas for more than 70 years and was married to Marianna for 64 years.

Bernie was the only child of Barney and Ella Stein. He spent most of his work career in the corrugated fiberboard business and retired at 60 to pursue other interests. Bernie was an accomplished builder and handyman. After WWII, he purchased two army barracks from Fort Ord, mating them to become the first family home in East Salinas. There were many other projects, which included adding on to the Mae Avenue home his father built, to house Bernie and Marianna's growing family.

Bernie was a WWII Veteran, earning the Bronze Star for bravery while serving his country. Until his death, he treasured his wooden military locker in which he kept his personal items including several medals and many war memories.

Bernie was a righteous man, humble and forgiving, and solid in his unswerving faith in God. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

He is survived by his sons, Keith (Debbie), Kenneth (Robin), David (Jill) and Erik (Katie); six granddaughters, Karen, Kandace, Carrie, Megan, Sarah and Ashley; two grandsons, Toby and Tyler; three great-granddaughters, Halle, Allison and Loralai; and four great-grandsons, Blaine, Rhett, Frankie and Josh.

Memorial services for Bernie will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 11:30 a.m., at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 580 Larkin Street in Salinas.

Following the Memorial service, there will be a reception in the Good Shepherd Fellowship Hall.

Private family Graveside services will take place prior to Memorial service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or one's favorite charity.
