Fred Hartwick Mantey

"I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die." John 11:25-26 (ESV)

Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, called his faithful servant, Fred Hartwick Mantey, to his eternal rest on the morning of August 3, 2014. He lived a full and rewarding life, committed to his family and to his undying faith in Jesus Christ.

Fred was born April 20, 1926, in Everett, Washington; the last child of H.B. Rudolph and Dorthea (Hollaender) Mantey. During his youth, the family moved to Yakima, Washington, where he attended high school and met the love of his life, Elayne Shirley. After serving from 1944-1946 in the United States Navy stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, he returned to Yakima and he and Elayne were married in 1946. Together they had five children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was a humble member of the "Greatest Generation."

After working in several occupations (auto-parts, sales, lumber and hardware), Fred moved his family to Seward, Nebraska in 1958 and pursued a degree in education to become a teacher. He served at his father's first teaching assignment at Zion Lutheran School in Snohomish, Washington and then was principal at Concordia Lutheran School in Tacoma, Washington. In 1967, the family moved to Salinas, California and Fred worked for the Salinas City School District. In addition to several teaching assignments, he was the first principal of University Park School and also served as principal of Las Padres School, Roosevelt School, Monterey Park School, and retired in 1986 from Loma Vista School.

During his 28 years of retirement, he enjoyed his growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling and cruising and visited numerous European countries. He was also a great wood craftsman and made many furniture items for family and friends in addition to toy riding tractors for two of his great-grandsons. He also loved automobiles and kept a list of the 33 cars he owned during his lifetime.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, H.B. and Dorthea (Hollaender) Mantey; his brothers, Melvin and Allen Mantey; his sister, Agnes Kester; grandson, Peter Mantey and granddaughter, Laura Adams.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Elayne and their five children, Thomas, Gary (Marnie), Barbara (Darryl) Smith, Steve (Sandi) Mantey and Nancy (Bryan) Hawes. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2014, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1230 Luther Way, Salinas, CA 93901.

In lieu of flowers, it was Fred's wish that donations be made to: Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1230 Luther Way, Salinas, CA 93901.
