She also enjoyed writing and published a book, "Fate, Luck and Miracles", about her good friends experiences in the US Navy in WWII. Among her other interests were researching her family genealogy.

Active in the local community, Helen served for several years with The Boy Scouts of America organization. She also served on the Board of the Salinas Concert Association and was a volunteer for the Salinas City School Recorder Program, a program dedicated to keeping music alive in Salinas City Schools.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John C. Grow; infant son, John Kevin Grow; brother, James C. Crane; sister, Margaret Hill and sister, Barbara Hendrickson.

She is survived by sons, James Grow and David Grow, both of Salinas; sisters, Willeda Bates of North Pole, Alaska, Linda Hayes of Salinas, Lois Robison of Lakehead; brother, Bill C. Crane of Elko, NV. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
