Lewis Eugene White, 87, longtime resident of Salinas, passed away in his sleep Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Pacific Coast Care Center, where he had lived the past year.
Born in Stafford, Kansas, Lewis lived in Kansas until joining the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was honorably discharged at the conclusion of the war. After the war, Lewis moved to Salinas, where he worked for AT&T, formerly known as Pacific Bell, for almost 40 years as a cable splicer. Lewis enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was an avid Oakland A's fan. He learned to fly private planes and took his solo flight in Salinas. Most of all, he took pleasure in his children and grandchildren. He was an assistant coach of his step-daughter's softball team.
Lewis is survived by his son, Charles White and partner, Zanaida Madayag of Salinas; daughter, Dr. Cheryl White and husband, Dr. Olaf Stuve of Dallas, TX; step-daughter, Renee DePratti and husband, Neil DePratti of Fremont; step-sons, Larry Silva of Pacifica and Tom Neely of Prescott, AZ; brother, Ray White and sister-in-law, Chauncey White of Kansas; grandchildren, Tricia Contreras, Aaron and Jessica Silva, Chase, Kenny and Kyle Neely; and Jacob, Nick and Zach DePratti; and great-grandson ,Connor Neely.
Lewis was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean M. White.
Cremation has taken place. Burial at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park with his wife Jean will be private. A private celebration of Lewis' life will be held by his family in December.
