Blomquist Henry

Margaret Agnes Blomquist Henry, 91, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Margaret Henry was the eighth of 13 children, born August 12, 1920, to Leon Blomquist and Anna Hansen.

The Blomquists have long been farmers in Monterey County. She grew up on a farm just outside Chualar. She graduated from Salinas High School, was a licensed cosmetologist and worked at a shop in Carmel.

She married Robert Henry of Hollister on September 13, 1941. They raised their three sons (Richard, Jim, David) in Orosi, CA. Margaret was involved in many civic and church activities such as scouting, PTA, 4-H. She was always a homemaker but also worked as a bookkeeper for a citrus packing house and retouched negatives for a local photographer. In early retirement they moved back to Salinas to be with family and enjoy the cooler weather. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She played the piano and harmonica. Until a few years ago she would delight visitors by playing "Home on the Range." She enjoyed camping, and with Bob, was a volunteer ranger with the National Forest Service at Lake Alpine for many years. They traveled in their motor home in the U.S. and took several trips to Europe. They were members of Northminster Presbyterian Church of Salinas.

Margaret was a sweet personality, always smiling and greeting others--even with Alzheimers. She wanted people to be comfortable. She was notorious for changing the subject when a conversation grew contentious by asking "Do you think it will rain?" A two-hands wave was her traditional goodbye to all who visited her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; son, Jim; four brothers, Harold, Art, Ray, Henry; and four sisters, Mildred Silacci, Dorothy Sgheiza, Nina Mathiesen and Alma Henry.

Surviving are Richard (Pat), David (Donna), and daughter-in-law, Jackie; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; four of the 13 siblings remain, Anne Twisselmann, Helen Pura, Walter Blomquist, and Gloria Chadwell.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m., in the chapel of Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 850 Abott St., Salinas.

Reception with a light lunch will be held following the memorial service in the Townsend Room of the Salinas Elks Lodge, 614 Airport Blvd., Salinas. Entrance is on the left side of the building.
