Rosemary "Mickey" Farrell, 86, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013. She was born November 3, 1926, in St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, to Joseph and Jean Gorman, moving to Long Beach in June 1942.
Mickey graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1944, and in 1948 from UCLA where, in addition to academics, was involved in many school and volunteer activities.
She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi, Spurs, Trolls and was the Editor of the 1948 The Southern Campus, the first book that covered the entire year through graduation. Many lifelong friends were established there.
Mickey was employed by the Home Audit Bureau of The Los Angles Times and later the General Telephone Directory in the Foreign Sales, all while remaining active in Antonians of St. Anthony's Church where she met Paul Farrell. After they became engaged and Paul left for school, she went to Long Beach State where she earned her teaching credential. They married and returned to Davenport, Iowa where she taught school as Paul finished his studies. Their first son, Tim, was born there before they returned to Long Beach where Paul received his Chiropractic license and their second son, Vincent, was born.
On July 1, 1957, the family moved to Salinas. Mickey became involved with Salinas Welcome Wagon, Jaycettes, YLI, the Sacred Heart choir and Los Bailadores. After four more sons, Paul Andrew, Michael, Christopher and Daniel, were born, her activities were focused on school with PTA. She took on a second RIF School, El Gabilan, which she did for 25 years. She also became a bridge player with her husband and with women's groups as well.
When the boys were older, she played golf, both at the Fairways and then SG&CC for more than 35 years. She was on the Grand Jury during a transition year of 18 months and a member of the Juvenal Justice committee for eight years.
After her boys were grown the family enjoyed a cabin at Mi Wuk for 10 years. Later, travels broadened to include visits with their son's families, as well as stops in all 50 states and pleasure trips including golf. With their passports Mickey and Paul ventured to every continent except Antarctica, and cruises on large and small ships. Her favorite trip took place in 2008 embarking from San Francisco through the Orient, Greece, Philadelphia and returning to San Francisco. Mickey and Paul's grandchildren have been able to share in trips and adventures with them to the delight of everyone.
Mickey is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Paul J. Farrell; six sons, Tim (Kerry) Farrell of Pennsylvania, Vincent Farrell of Salinas, Paul Andrew (Ginger) Farrell of Texas, Michael Farrell of San Diego, Christopher (Brenda) Farrell of New York, Daniel (Roni) Farrell of Oregon; and 18 grandchildren, Casey Elizabeth, (John), Matt (Laura), Paul, Emily, Alex, Julia, Ryan, Shannon, Joseph, Zack, Drew, Nicholas, Daniel, Hannah, Kelly, Mitch, Audrey and Mikaela.
She enjoyed a wonderful life in Salinas and wished to thank her many friends and family, and all the people who shared in activities with her as she watched the town grow from 25,000 in 1957 to 150,000 today.
Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., at Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Dr., Salinas, CA 93906.
