Victor "Mickey" Collins

Victor "Mickey" Collins passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by family at 1:11am July 11, 2014. As a long time pillar of the Salinas community and patriarch of his large family, his loss will be profoundly felt while the positive legacy of his life will live on.

He was born in NYC April 13, 1937 but grew up in Hoboken, NJ. He served in the US Navy from 1955 until 1959. Mickey then moved to Salinas to attend Hartnell College. He met Kay Foncannon in 1963 and after a 6 month courtship, they married. He joined the Salinas Police Department in January of 1964 and after 29½ years he retired in 1993 as Assistant Police Chief. While on the Police Department, he attended San Jose State University and achieved Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Police Science.

His son Patrick was born in 1964, followed by two daughters, Catherine in 1966 and Christine in 1975. His children were active in sports and Mickey was a familiar figure at the announcing table and Palma and Notre Dame High Schools, then later at Hartnell College. When his grandchildren began playing sports his affiliation moved to Hilmar, where he never missed a game.

Mickey served as the President of the Monterey County Peace Officers Association, as President of the Salinas Host Lions Club, and was Lion of the Year in 1987. He was also past President of the Salinas Police Athletic League and head of Hartnell College security for 25 years. Mickey volunteered for more than 30 years at Sun Street Center serving as a Board Member, Board President, and Chair of PARTS Coalition and was passionate about preventing substance abuse among youth in Salinas.

At the present time, he was on the Pastoral Council for the Diocese of Monterey County and a member of S.I.R.S.

Mickey was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Kay; his son, Patrick Collins of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter, Catherine (John Benning) of Hilmar and Christine Sukhbir Kaur (Chris Haney) of Sacramento. He also is survived by his six grandchildren, Ally, Katie, and Drew Collins of Scottsdale, AZ, Justin Benning of Washington DC, and Caitlin and Erin Benning of Hilmar. Also surviving Mickey is his sister, Margaret of Connecticut and Kim Stearns (Bob) of Medford, OR.

The family wishes to especially thank Joe and Rosemary Kingston as well as his God Daughter, Diane Malloy for their unwavering love and support during Mickey's hospitalization. A special thanks to Dr. Richard Gerber for showing so much compassion for Mickey and his family.
