Joseph George Barbaccia, 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at Bishop McCarthy Residence in Vineland.
He was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Vineland to the late Joseph and Jennie (Sineni) Barbaccia.
Joseph attended Vineland High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1937. Until 1945, he served in the 685th Aircraft Warning Service at St. Johns, Newfoundland, Fort Slocum in New York and Fort Shafter in Honolulu, Hawaii. On Oct. 4, 1942, while still in the service, he married Vera (Viola) Barbaccia. They were devoted partners for 42 years, until her death in 1985. After military service, Joseph worked for South Jersey Gas Company. Always known for his work ethic, he received the 1968 A. Kirk Wellman Memorial Award for his salesmanship. For many years, Joseph was actively involved in Vineland Little League, managing the Diamond Social Club team. In 1959, he managed the first team from Vineland to go to the New Jersey Little League State Championships. In 1966, the Vineland Little League recognized him for his years of dedicated service. Baseball was his favorite sport and he was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. He also was an avid gardener and enjoyed golfing. He was a member of the American Legion Nabb-Leslie Post 82, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Diamond Social Club for more than 60 years.
Joseph is survived by two sons, Stephen and his wife Julie (Temple) Barbaccia of Vineland, and Joseph G. Barbaccia Jr. and his partner Sara Gray of Hidden Valley, Pa.; brother, James Barbaccia of Boca Raton, Fla.; sister-in-law, Maria (Petruzzi) Barbaccia of West Chester, Pa.; grandson, Brad Barbaccia of Tequesta, Fla.; granddaughter, Holly Barbaccia and husband Ryan Mann of Lexington, Ky.; granddaughter, Ashley (Barbaccia) Pieraccini and husband Peter Pieraccini of Durham, N.C.; granddaughter, Jamie Barbaccia of Vineland; great-grandchildren, Mia, Ava and Leo Pieraccini and Stephen Ryan Mann; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera (Viola) Barbaccia; brothers, Andrew, John and William Barbaccia; sisters, Jennie (Barbaccia) Fairhurst, Rose (Barbaccia) Sbaraglia and Dora (Barbaccia) Anastasio; and daughter-in-law, Bobbi (Baylin) Barbaccia.
A funeral home visitation will be held Tuesday from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. from Rone Funeral Service. Interment will be at Siloam Cemetery, 550 N. Valley Ave., Vineland.
