Neal W. Slack, 96, of Woodstown, formerly of Millville, died on Monday, April 1, 2013, at the Friends Home.
He was born Jan. 23, 1917, at 3rd and Pine streets in Millville and grew up in Pitman, the son of the late Walter and Edith Slack. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 70 years, Dorothy Carson Slack; daughter, Margaret Valvo; son, Robert C. Slack; and sisters, Connie Dougherty, Jane Roash and Helen Teets. He is survived by his brother, Charles Slack of Corona del Mar, Calif.; sons, David N. Slack of Ewan and James W. Slack (Gemma) of Bethesda, Md.; and daughter, Cynthia S. Ehlinger (Joseph) of Riverside, Conn.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He attended Lawrenceville School, Princeton University and Harvard Business School and was a captain in the Army during World War II. He joined Wheaton Industries in 1946, retiring as secretary of the company in 1979. He then worked for Durand International and taught business classes at Cumberland County College. He was an avid tennis player and square dancer and caller, a longtime member of the Union Lake Sailing and Tennis Club in Millville, and also served the community as a director of the Millville YMCA, member of the Millville Board of Education, and Board of Trustees of the Millville Hospital and Millville Public Library.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
