Waterford - David F. Mathis Sr., TMC, USN (ret.), 88, of 120 Spithead Road, Waterford, passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

He was born in Anson County, N.C., on Aug. 13, 1925, the son of Francis and Ruth (Sings) Mathis. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June of 1943, and retired in December of 1966. He then worked as a postal clerk at the Waterford Post Office for 22 years.
David was married to Betty (Bindloss) Corcoran on May 16, 1981, in New London.
He was a member and past commander of Post 21, Disabled Amercian Veterans, and a member of the SubVets and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, David F. Mathis Jr. of Texas, Robert Mathis of Warwick, R.I., Bryan Corcoran and Kevin Corcoran, both of Waterford; eight daughters, Bettie Jean Gissel of South Carolina, Cynthia Sarver of Florida, Barbara Khoury of Massachusetts, Frances Salo of Florida, Sandra Grady and Lori Corcoran, both of New London, and Kerry Morth and Kristin Bender, both of Waterford. He is also survived by a sister, Marjorie Leonard of South Carolina; 25 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St, New London. Interment with military honors will be in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
