Waterford - Donald E. Parker passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at The William W. Backus Hospital after a brief illness.

Don was born on July 22, 1938, in Cambridge, Mass., to Jesse Lee and Mary (Sowerder) Parker. He grew up in Cambridge and became an avid fan of the Boston Bruins. He attended Cambridge High and Latin High School where he graduated 3rd in his graduating class of over 500. He married Carmela Balda on April 24, 1965 at St. Mary's Church in New London. They recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

At the age of 18 years old, he enlisted in the Navy. He was Stationed in Washington, D.C. for most of his career at the Naval Security Station as a cryptologist. Don also served in Vietnam and did tours in London and Turkey. He retired in 1976 with the rank of CTAC and earned the Good Conduct Medal.

Upon retirement from the service, he relocated to Waterford. He then worked at Electric Boat for 20 years and retired as supervisor of the plan files. Later, he worked at A&P Warehouse Liquors as a clerk. He was an active member of St. Paul's Church in Waterford and served as an usher for many years at the Saturday Mass. He is a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, EB retirees, and Knights of Columbus.

Don leaves his wife, Carmela; daughters, Donna Marie and her husband, Josh Olmstead, and Jennifer (Parker) Turck. He also leaves a fraternal twin brother, Ronald.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his older brother, Jesse.

His greatest accomplishment in life came in 2003, when he became a "Poppy." He was most proud of his three grandchildren, Scott, Carmine and Elizabeth.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. The funeral will assemble at 11 a.m. Monday and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Paul Church, 170 Rope Ferry Road, Waterford. Interment with military honors will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
