Mystic - Ernest R. Balestracci Sr., 87, of Mystic, husband of the late Mary Jane (Willis) Balestracci, passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Born in Mystic, he was the son of the late Luigi and Verna (Colecchia) Balestracci and was a lifelong resident. Ernie was a salesman with Hendel's Furniture Store in New London for over 50 years. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran during World War II, serving in the Pacific.

Ernie loved watching baseball, especially the New York Yankees, and enjoyed watching old western movies. His family will always remember and cherish the special times they spent together, whether at a family function or Ernie just being there to lend a hand to someone any way he could. He will be deeply missed by his loving family.

He is survived by his son, Ernest R. Balestracci Jr. and his wife, Terri, of Mystic; step-son, Kenneth Gatchek and his wife, Linda, of Preston; step-daughter, Linda Abbiati and her husband, James, of Ledyard; numerous grandchildren, especially Thomas and Joseph Balestracci; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Nellie Esposito, Peter, Jeff, Alfonso and Frank Balestracci.

His family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Rt.1, Mystic. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Saint Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. Burial will follow with full military honors at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
