East Lyme - Harry W. Colonis, 79, of Niantic and Vero Beach, Fla., died peacefully Tuesday, April 1, 2014, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving wife and caring family.|
Harry was born in Scranton, Pa., April 5, 1934, the son of William and Kanella (Kalamaris) Colonis. He was a graduate of the former Bulkeley School in New London. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War, "Semper Fi". He graduated from Mitchell College with an associate's degree in business administration.
Harry retired after many years in the banking industry and went on to establish Atlantic Mortgage Company, Inc. He was a member and past president of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in New London; a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Ft. Pierce, Fla.; a fifty year member of the Elks Lodge and member of the Fraternal Order of AHEPA.
Harry enjoyed many joyous occasions while grilling for his family and many friends. He also enjoyed extensive travels, especially his many visits to Aruba and becoming a Vero Beach "snow-bird". Other hobbies included golfing, bicycling, skiing, and long walks on the beach.
Harry is survived by his wife of 27 Â½ years, Sharon (Collins) Colonis; son, Harry Paul Colonis and wife, Kathy, of Waterford; daughter, Nellie Rodriguez and husband, Armando, of Oakdale; step-sons, Shawn Jackson and significant other Maria, Todd Jackson and wife, Cindy, all of Groton; and four brothers, James Colonis and wife, Claudette, of Montville, Steven Colonis and wife, Patricia, Peter Colonis and wife Maria, Angelo Colonis and wife, Selma, all of Waterford. He cherished his seven grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan Jackson, Connor Jackson, Alex and Matthew Rodriguez, Angela and Marina Colonis. He is also survived by many cousins nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Angela (Marinis) Colonis.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London.
