North Stonington - James Alan White, CDR, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.), 69, of North Stonington, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, surrounded by his family.

Born on Sept. 27, 1943, in New London, he was the son of Charles and Dorothy (Holmes) White. Jim graduated from Waterford High School in 1961, and attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, graduating in 1965.

He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Venti, on June 10, 1965.

Jim had a 20 year career in the Coast Guard. He earned graduate degrees from Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif., Naval War College, Newport, R.I., and New York University. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star for courageous actions. His duty stations include Galveston, Texas, Cape May, N.J., Governors Island, N.Y., and teaching tours at the USCGA and the Naval War College. He "Reveres Honor, Honors Duty." Semper Paratus.

After retiring from the Coast Guard, Jim was instrumental in the leasing and sale of real estate in southeastern Connecticut as a broker with US Properties. Additionally, he was an instructor for agents and wrote mortgages. Jim also served as the president of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association for four years. He was actively involved with the New London Chamber of Commerce and served as the president of the Investment Division of the New London Area Eastern Connecticut Association of Realtors.

As an avid golfer and a member of Elmridge and Norwich Golf Courses, Jim enjoyed playing at every opportunity.

Jim is survived by his wife, Donna, and their four children, Theresa White Banker of North Stonington, James Alan White II "Jay" of St. Louis, Mo., Thomas J.C. White and Johanna Meghan White, both of North Stonington. He is also survived by four grandchildren, James Alan White III, Emily Renae White, Katrina Anne Shulda, and Karolyn Alyssa Shulda; a brother, Richard C. White; nieces and nephews.

A brother, Charles A. White, predeceased him.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the Memorial Chapel, U.S. Coast Guard Academy. A reception will follow the service at the USCGA Alumni Center. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with full military honors at a time and date to be announced.
