Stonington - John "Jack" D. Claffey, 67, of Stonington, husband of the late Cecile (Arthur) Claffey, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013.

Born in New Haven, he was the son of the late Daniel and Margaret (Facey) Claffey and lived in Stonington for the past 15 years, previously residing in New Haven for most of his life.
He was a firefighter with the City of New Haven. Throughout his 28 years as a fireman, he was with numerous engine companies up until his retirement in 1998. After his retirement from the Fire Department, Jack was the proprietor of Ackley's Package Store in Groton. He was a member of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society in Stonington and the V.F.W. Hugo Simonelli Post 3263 in Mystic.
Jack's greatest pleasure was to be among family and friends. No matter how sick he was, he always had a positive outlook.
Jack is survived by his twin sisters, Jean Hines of Pompano Beach, Fla. and Joan Sandella of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; step-son, Terry Shea and his wife, Priscilla, of New Hampshire; step-grandchildren, Page, Jessica and Lisa; step-great-grandchildren, Ethan, Zoey and Adalyn; several nieces and nephews, especially his beloved niece, Sandra Hines and her daughter, Laura Jean Hines of West Haven who cared for him the past six years; sister-in-law, Gloria Lenoir and her husband, Jim, of New London; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and his beloved dog, Cocoa and cat, Kujo.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Barbara Ross of York, Maine, Daniel Claffey of Coca Beach, Fla., William "Pudge" Claffey of New Haven and Elizabeth Chapell of New Haven.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic (51 Williams Ave.) A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Thomas More Church, 87 Mystic Ave. (Route 201), North Stonington. Burial will follow at Stonington Cemetery, 345 North Main St., Stonington.
