Ledyard - Luther E. "Ed" Bess, 81, of 10 Laurel Leaf Drive, Gales Ferry, died at his residence on Saturday evening, Nov. 9, 2013.|
He was born on June 2, 1932, in Omaha, Neb., the son of Luther and Elna (Hendrix) Bess.
He married Annette (Gudeahn) Bess in Groton, on May 6, 1967.
Ed served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a senior chief electrician in 1980, after 28 years. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Following his military service, he worked as an inventory maintenance specialist for Supervisor of Shipbuilding at Electric Boat.
He was a member of the Ledyard Lions, the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, and the Fleet Reserve, Branch 20.
In addition to his wife, Annette, he leaves a son, Paul Buskey and his wife, Kathy, of Ledyard; two daughters, Andrea Bunnell of Norwich and Kimberly King of California; a sister, Edith Pouquette of Williams, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Jason Thornton, Laurice Panzella, and Gina Dixon; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. Burial with military honors will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. A calling hour will be held at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1650 Route 12, Gales Ferry, CT 06335.
