Norwich - Marion "Babe" S. McKelvin, 52, of 139B Laurel Hill Road, passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, surrounded by his family at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Marion was born April 16, 1961, in New London, the son of the late Izaree (Pryor) McKelvin and the late Harold E. McKelvin Sr. Marion married Shaneen Strong on Sept. 10, 2011, in Groton.
A 1980 graduate of New London High School, Marion was a member of the football team. He was an avid fisherman, drum corps enthusiast, and sports fan. He loved the University of Michigan and his enthusiasm for the team was so infectious that his son, wife and grandson also became fans.
Before his illness, Marion worked as an inventory clerk at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket.
Besides his wife, Marion is survived by two stepsons, Jerome Taylor and Bobby Johnson, both of Norwich; one stepdaughter, Amanda Taylor of Norwich; one sister, Trudy McKelvin of New London; one grandson, Cameron J.I. Taylor of Norwich; one nephew, Troy J. McKelvin Sr. of New London; one niece, Kacy Coleman of New London; and one great-nephew, Troy J. McKelvin Jr. of New London.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Interment will be private. A calling hour will be held at noon on Monday.
