Westerly - Mary Leone (Bigelow) Henn, 74, of Westerly, passed away on June 15, 2013.|
Mary was born in Madison, Wis., on Dec. 7, 1938, to Jesse Lynn and Josephine Bigelow. Mary graduated from Madison East High School in 1956 and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1960.
In 1961, she married LaVerne Henn. Mary and Vern lived in Wisconsin up until 1966, when they moved their family to Groton. Mary was a member of the Rainbow Girls and First Church of Christ Congregational in Groton. Mary was a school teacher who began her career in Groton, teaching first grade at Noank Elementary. She ended her career at Pleasant Valley Elementary, when she retired in 1995. Shortly after her retirement, Mary and Vern moved to Conway, N.H., where they owned a vacation home until finally settling in Tamworth, N.H. Mary was a very active member of the Conway Village Congregational Church, where she sang in the church choir and volunteered at numerous church fundraisers and events. Mary also found the time to volunteer at the Gibson Senior Center in North Conway Village. She enjoyed reading and gardening.
In 2007, Mary moved to Westerly, where she lived at The Elms. Mary became a resident at the Clipper Home in Westerly in 2009.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Lynn and Josephine, and her husband, LaVerne.
Mary is survived by her brother, David L. Bigelow of Utah; sons, Steven Henn of Bridgeport and Joseph Henn and his wife, Paula, of Pawcatuck; daughter, Carol (Henn) Startz and her husband, Bruce, of Mystic; and two granddaughters, Brooke and Cassandra Startz of Mystic.
The wake will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, at Furber & White Funeral Home, North Conway, N.H. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 21, at the Conway Village Congregational Church.
