Waterford - Richard A. Grimes Jr., 88, Niantic, formerly of 945 Vauxhall St., Waterford, passed away Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at Bride Brook Health & Rehab in Niantic.|
Born in New London, he was the son of the late Richard A. Grimes Sr. and Lila Beatrice (Wilcox) Grimes. Mr. Grimes retired in 1980, as a machinist at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab after 30 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe in World War II.
He is survived by two sons, Dennis and Betsy Grimes of Bedford, N.H., and Thomas and Michele Grimes of Groton; a daughter, Sherry and Larry Post of Valley Springs, S.D.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances M. (Hallas) Grimes, who he married on July 8, 1948.
He was also preceded by three brothers, George A. Grimes, Lawrence R. Grimes, and Francis M. Grimes.; and two sisters, Lyla M. (Grimes) Moyer and Mary E. (Grimes) Gonelli.
A shared memory was when he looked up into the sky and saw the Hindenburg flying overhead only to hear later that it had crashed.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the Thomas L. Neilan Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Funeral services will immediately follow at 5 p.m. Interment will be private.
