East Lyme - Robert J. Datum, 84, of 12 Chadwick Place, Niantic, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2014, at the home of his son, Mark Datum.

Robert was born Oct. 3, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of the late Adam Datum and Alice (Petroskas) Datum.

A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Datum served honorably in the U.S. Navy submarine service. After leaving the navy, he was employed as a marine draftsman for Electric Boat, an electrical designer for Matrix, A&T, Sonalysts, and Millstone.

He met the love of his life, Lillian Nelson, and they married on Aug. 11, 1951, at the Lutheran Church of our Redeemer in New London, and together settled in Niantic. They resided there for over 60 years, raising seven children. A man of deep faith, he became one of the founding members of Christ Lutheran Church in Niantic.

Bob was a very creative and talented person who loved inventing things. He enjoyed performing in musicals with the East Lyme Arts Counsel and attending musicals with Lillian. Bob was an avid cyclist who would ride his bike from Niantic to work in Groton. He loved his large family.

Bob leaves behind his children, Mark and his wife, Melissa Datum, of Niantic, Deborah Roberts and her husband, Lawrence, of Waterford, Christine Shirey and her husband, Christopher, of Griswold, Edward Datum of New London, Michael Datum and his wife, Jennifer, of Old Lyme, Robert J. Datum Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Chicago, and Joy Lootsma and her husband, Wayne, of Deep River; a brother, William Datum and his wife, June; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (Nelson) Datum; two sisters, Beatrice Corton and Ruth Fair; and a brother, George Datum.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today, June 4, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, at Christ Lutheran Church, 24 Society Road, Niantic.

The family requests that donations in his memory be made to Center for Hospice Care Southeast Connecticut, 227 Dunham Road, Norwich, CT 06360 or to the Christ Lutheran Church Memorial Garden Fund, 24 Society Road, Niantic, CT 06357.
