East Lyme - Samuel G. Morrison of East Lyme, died from mesothelioma on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his children.

He was born in Bethel, on Nov. 27, 1922, the son of Garfield and Hazel (Andrews) Morrison.

Sam was married to Betty Urban on June 16, 1945, in New Canaan. Betty died on Nov. 29, 1995.

Sam graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a naval architect in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. He worked as a naval architect at Electric Boat Co., from 1954 until his retirement in 1987. Upon retirement, he began working as an interpreter at the Mystic Seaport. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church and sang in the choir for 58 years, as well as serving on many committees at the church. He was a member and past president of the East Lyme Historical Society and a member of the East Lyme Cemetery Association.

Sam is survived by a son, William G. Morrison of East Lyme and partner, Lucie Springman, of South Portland, Maine; two daughters, Elizabeth Morrison and partner, Elliot Sloan, of Woodstock, and Martha Morrison Veranth and husband, John Veranth, of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a sister, Caroline Garrett of Cupertino, Calif.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Second Congregational Church, Broad and Hempstead Streets, New London. Private interment will be in East Lyme Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
