Waterford - Thelma Elizabeth (Beattie) Pafias, a lifelong resident of Connecticut, died peacefully at Bayview Healthcare Center on Sunday, May 4, 2014, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 91.

She was born Aug. 25, 1922, in New London, the daughter of Ellis and Mary (Perry) Beattie. Thelma lived in New London and was a resident of Waterford for the last 64 years of her life.
Before retirement, Thelma worked in food services at the Eugene O'Neill Theater and Waterford High School, the last 15 years as head cook at Oswegatchie School.
Thelma was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Niantic, the Waterford VFW Auxilary, and was a member of the Flanders Baptist and Community Church, East Lyme.
She was predeceased by her husband, Aristotle of 60 years, and a grandson, James S. Pafias.
She is survived by two sons, Risto Pafias (Linda) and James E. Pafias (Luzmin) of Henderson, Nevada; five grandchildren, Christopher Pafias (Heidi) and Christina Long (Michael), both of Waterford, Trixie Musto (Gregory) of Rocky Face, Ga., Windsor Pafias of Indialantic, Fla., and Spenser Pafias of Las Vegas, Nevada. Thelma also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
The family wants to give a special thank you to all Thelma's caregivers of the second floor, Bayview Healthcare Center, and Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion.
Thelma was an avid traveler, visiting Europe and South America with her late husband, Aristotle, on the Merchant Marine ship he served on for many years. Thelma also traveled extensively in the United States, making several trips across the country.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Thomas L Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. Interment will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Boston Post Road, Waterford.
Donations may be made to the National MS Society Connecticut Chapter, 659 Tower Ave., Hartford, CT 06112, in honor of Thelma's granddaughter, Christina, or to Beacon Hospice 12 Roosevelt Ave., Mystic, CT 06355.
