East Lyme - Walter Charles "Bud" Rice Jr., 84, of Niantic died Monday, May 5, 2014, at Bride Brook Health & Rehabilitation Center in Niantic.
The Guest Book is expired.
Bud was born on Sept. 15, 1929, in New London, the son of Walter Charles Rice Sr. and Lucille (Congdon) Rice. He honorably served our country in the U.S. Navy and was an active member of the Niantic Volunteer Fire Department for a number of years.
Among other things, Bud owned the Carvel Ice Cream Shop in Niantic, worked as a stockbroker for many years in New London, and most recently sold real estate in the area. He was a serious collector of antique postcards, traveling to regional shows for at least a decade or two. In his younger years he was an avid sailor, spending a great deal of time on the water. His love for the water kept him along the Niantic shores for his entire life.
Bud is survived by his wife, Betsy (Dickinson) (Dinan) Rice, her three children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and as well his sister, Sally Cunningham of Florida, her son and three grandsons.
He was predeceased by a nephew.
