Wanda Brelesky Obituary
Waterford - Wanda (Kaczor) Brelesky, 97, died peacefully during a nap Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, at her home of 63 years in Waterford.

She was born on Aug. 17, 1917, in Shutesbury, Mass., the oldest child of Joseph Kaczor and Laura (Pekalsky) Kaczor. She grew up in Yonkers, N.Y., where she attended Public School No. 3, Nathaniel Junior High School, and Commerce High School.

After graduation in 1936, Wanda worked in New York City for New York Life Insurance Co., for 14 years.

On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1944, she married Anthony Brelesky in St. Peters Church, Yonkers, N.Y., while Tony was on active duty in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1951, the couple moved to Waterford. They divorced in 1966. A few years later, Wanda began working in the library at Connecticut College, and it was from there that she retired in 1988.

She was an active member of VFW Auxiliary Post 189 in New London for many years. She was also a member of the Ladies Guild at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Quaker Hill.

Wanda often said, "Don't mourn my passing, celebrate my life. It was a good one." She is remembered for her constant smile, frequent laughter, happy demeanor, and optimistic personality. She was blessed with a healthy life; her reward for being so kind and loving to her family.

Wanda is survived by the love of her life, John Keating of New London. They met at the VFW and became great companions, traveling everywhere and enjoying each other's company for 35 years and four months. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Mary Kaczor of Waterford; her three nephews and their families, Mark Kaczor and his wife, Mary, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Brian Kaczor and his wife, Kathy, of Durham, Maine, Dennis Kaczor and his wife, Champika, of Monticello, Ill., and their children, Arjun and Maya; and her exceptional in-home caregiver over the past four years, Joyce "Nana" Odenya.

Wanda was predeceased by her brother, Charles Kaczor in 2013.

Family and friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London. The funeral procession will assemble at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4, at the funeral home and proceed to Our Lady Perpetual Help Church, Quaker Hill, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11a.m. Entombment will follow in St. Mary Mausoleum, Jefferson Ave., New London.
