Polly J. Murphy, May 24, 1912 - April 19, 2012. Born in Long Beach, California on May 24, 1912, Polly (Marjorie) Jane Mattison Murphy passed away peacefully on April 19 just short of her 100th birthday. At Woodrow Wilson High School, Polly earned a Gold W and was vice president of her senior class. She was also a member of the Scholarship Society and the California Scholarship Federation. She attended UCLA in 1930, the first year of the university's new campus in Westwood, and graduated in 1934. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and Psi Chi, an honorary psychology fraternity. In 1935, she married her college sweetheart, Thomas Caswell Murphy. She had two sons, the late Thomas Clayton Murphy and Robert Winton Murphy of Indio. She lived in Long Beach until 1973 when she retired from the Long Beach Unified School system and moved to Carpinteria to be near her sons and grandchildren. She was known for her keen wit and loved traveling the world. Polly was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and an avid bridge player. In 2001, she moved to Lakeshore Gardens in Carlsbad, and in the fall of 2009, she moved in with her son, Bob, and daughter-in-law Madeline, at Heritage Palms Country Club in Indio. While there, she continued her love of reading and made many new friends. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, three grandchildren; Dr. Shawn Thomas Murphy of Kauai, Hawaii, Erin Murphy Smith of Rancho Santa Fe and Stephanie Murphy Keaty of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and eight great grandchildren. There will be a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the Braille Institute of America, Inc.
