Shirley L. Carpenter, 89, a 37-year resident of Indio, Calif., passed away peacefully on March 29, 2013 at her home in Bermuda Dunes, Calif., surrounded by loved ones. Born in Milwaukee, Wis. on January 17, 1924 to Francis and Irving Borisch. She had six brothers, Earl Borisch, Charles Borisch, Donald Borisch, Duane Borisch, Darrell Borisch, and Irving Borisch and five sisters, Mildred Borisch, Dolores Carerros, Jeri Winter, Darlene Bigley, and Patt Wollemann. Shirley served as a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy from January 26, 1944 to December 1, 1945. It was there that she met Hershall "Pete" Carpenter and they married on July 7, 1945 in Bethesda, MD. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete of 51 years in 1996. Shirley was also preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Darrell, Donald, and Irving; and three sisters, Mildred, Dolores, and Darlene; and her grandson, Adam Carpenter. Shirley is survived by one son and three daughters; Michael and Marianne of Maricopa, Ariz., Sharon and Louie Patino of Bermuda Dunes, Gail and Nick Diliberto of Yucaipa, Calif., and Darlene and Terry King of Cherry Valley, Calif. She had 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Shirley was lovingly called Nanny by her family members and will be remembered for her kindness and good humor. She once raised 500 chicks that her husband brought home by putting them in the oven and nursing them back to life. Nanny also tended a huge vegetable garden. Over the years, she cared for her grandchildren and brought happiness to those around her. She will be dearly missed and we know that she will be watching over us all from heaven. A special thank you to the staff at Visiting Nurse Association for the loving and compassionate care they provided for Nanny during this difficult time. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013, followed by a rosary service at 11:00 a.m. A resurrection funeral mass will be celebrated at 12:00 noon. All services will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Church in Indio.
