Howard Theodore Heintz

Howard Theodore Heintz whose five-decade career evolved from developing retail sales for the Girl Scouts of America to groundbreaking merchandise buying in East Asia, died March 7 at 98. Howard was born in 1914 in New York, N.Y., and graduated from Cornell University in 1936. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the Navy and served as supply officer for a PT boat base in the Philippines. In 1946, he went to work for St. Louis-based department store Stix Baer & Fuller. In 1963, he joined Best & Co. as senior vice president. The family moved to Wilton, Conn, and enjoyed sailing on Long Island Sound. He joined the Associated Merchandising Corp. and in 1975 was promoted to vice president–Asia and moved to Hong Kong. Back in the U.S., he negotiated Target Corp.'s membership in the AMC. He retired to Grantham, N.H., and Chevy Chase, Md.
His wife Ruth Janet Brodhead Heintz died in 2004. Howard's five sons, Ted, Jeff, John, Stephen, and Chris, their wives, eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren miss him greatly.
A memorial service will be March 14 in Chevy Chase. Gifts in his memory may go to Cornell University or the Wilton Presbyterian Church.
